Bingo - the national gameNational Bingo: Key Facts • Bingo was revolutionised on 16 July 1985 by an amendment to
the 1968 Gaming Act. The Gaming (Bingo) Act 1985 permitted games of multiple
bingo to be played, where pre-selected numbers were `called` within the
same time window in each of the participating clubs. Combined with high
speed computer technology, this made the creation of `The National Bingo
Game` possible. Source: http://www.national-game.co.uk
Press Releases from The National Game site RESEARCH SHOWS WIDENED APPEAL FOR BINGO
LUCKY OLD SOLES Oldham was hailed as the Luckiest Town in Britain yesterday (tues) with SIX big Bingo wins -- in just FIVE days. Players in the town's lone bingo hall called house to the tune of £398,000 over the last 12 months - more wins than anywhere else in the country. Amazingly all the huge payouts in Oldham, lancs., came over a five day period in January. Gloucester came second, also with SIX wins at one club, with the winners picking up a cool £333,000 between them. Washington, in Tyne and Wear, was third with FIVE wins at the one club, but the lucky players actually picked up £407,000. The National Bingo Game Association (NBGA) calculated the figures solely on the number of winners over £10,000 and not the big cash sums involved. NBGA spokesman Steve Baldwin said: ''We had 535 winners last year, each winning on average £75,000. 'The National Game is played 364 days a year and the prize fund is on average £100,000 a night.'' Lady Luck smiled on Oldham during the phenomenal five day period in January this year which included TWO £51,000 prizes on the SAME DAY - January 16th. The other big wins were on the 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th. The biggest payout was £102,000 on the 17th. In the league of bingo-barmy towns and cities the unluckiest were Liverpool, Coventry, Hull, Preston and Gateshead with just a single win each. Taking into account cash prizes London, Glasgow and Birmingham came top because they have the most clubs. Players in London landed a total of £1.72m, Glaswegian bingo fans collected £1.32m and in Birmingham players called house to the tune of £1.2m over the last 12 months. Steve Baldwin added: ''The National Bingo Game pays out on average £1m in prize money each week. 'With research showing that 96% of regular players have had a win, there's a good chance of scooping some big money at Bingo!'' The full top ten towns were: ENDS
BEST BET FOR BINGO THIS FRIDAY 13TH Ticket sales for Friday 13th December showed that more than 20,000 regular Bingo players suffer from pogonophobia – fear of the number 13! Steve Baldwin of the National Bingo Game Association said, “Britain’s Bingo players should take advantage this Friday13th, it may just be their lucky day!” This means that the odds of winning a massive £100,000 on the National Game could increase by 20,000 to 1, so why not throw caution to the wind this Friday 13th June, grab your dabber and head to your local Bingo club. You never know your luck! And it’s not just Friday 13th that brings out the superstitious nature of Britain’s Bingo players. The National Game surveyed Bingo club managers to find out what are the other superstitions that Bingo players have in the UK: - 1. Lucky seat Other superstitions included a player who knew she would win if she
saw four magpies at the same time and one respondent who knew her luck

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
A 75-year-old Blackpool widow had no sleep at all last night (Sunday) after scooping more than £500,000 on the special Mother’s Day National Bingo Game at the Mecca Club in Talbot Road. “I was in total shock and couldn’t stop shaking and had to ask a friend to come over and sit with me,” said the winner, who has asked not to be named. “I usually play two afternoons a week, and although I decided to go that night because it was the big game, I never ever dreamt I would actually win it!” A very active and independent lady normally, the winner had an accident while on holiday in Singapore two years ago and has had to wear a calliper and use a wheelchair ever since. “I slipped on the tiles after getting out of the shower and broke my leg very badly. I am having an operation to re-pin it next month, including a knee replacement, which I am praying will mean I can walk again,” she said. “I can drive myself in my automatic car to the Mecca and then the staff there, who are so helpful, fetch me a wheelchair and take me to a table. On Sunday I changed my routine and sat at a different table, one where I had won £150 before. It must have worked!” A bingo player for four years, she said she hadn’t had a win for some weeks. She won the National Game prize of £500,000, plus a further Regional prize of £2,119 and the club prize of £289, having completed a ‘full house’ in 39 numbers, the fewest anywhere nationwide. more… The winner, who has a 54-year-old son, said she would also use some of the money to repay the kindness of family, friends and neighbours. “I don’t know what I would have done without them since the accident,” she said, “even though I have carers come in as well. I also have a friend who needs a stair lift and I will buy one for her.” The woman said her husband, who sadly died seven years ago, had started a local company which her son now runs. According to a new nationwide survey* commissioned by the National Bingo Game Association a week in advance of the UK’s biggest ever jackpot of up to £1/2million, being played on Sunday 23rd December, when it comes to winning large sums of money, men and women have very different ideas of how it should be spent! As a nation of dreamers, a mere 4% of those polled were confident they wouldn’t change a thing if they were the lucky winner. Confirming perhaps what both sexes have always suspected, the research suggests that men live up to their stereotype and tend towards more frivolous expenditures – accounting for 58% of those who said they’d splash out on a new car and over half of those who’d spend it on the best festive party to end all parties. 60% of women, meanwhile, would rather invest the money for the future while 53% would use it to pay off the mortgage. But the vanity of the fairer sex came through nonetheless, accounting for 91% of those who admitted that they would have some form of cosmetic surgery. Not all women, however, wanted simply to invest for the future - 61% said they’d put their winnings towards travelling round the world. However, the maternal instinct clearly shone through with women proving more generous with their prize money. Indeed, 64% of those who said they’d give the money to charity were women as were the 61% who would opt to share it out amongst family and friends. - more -
As if to prove our continental neighbours with their “insular Britain” theories wrong once and for all, travel proved by far the most popular dream for 65% of the nation. Interestingly, 65% of these were married compared to 19% of singletons who would like to see more of the world. Furthermore, a whopping 89% of those who said they’d spend their half a million navigating the world in a hot air balloon were married as were the 64% who would opt instead for a small island in the sun – of which a staggering 92% were men! Whilst this may suggest that couples have more glamorous ideas of what they would do with their money, evidence arose to suggest that marriage may stifle creativity as only 21% of the happily married would choose to make a movie, contrasting strongly with the 68% of single folk who apparently harbour a deep-rooted desire to be the next Spielberg. And as a final word of warning, men should perhaps take note that 69% of those who said they would make their divorce wish come true were… their wives! Psychologist Dr David Lewis who analysed the survey findings on behalf of the NGBA commented, ‘'The way we choose to spend £500,000 shows that we feel an overwhelming need to reward ourselves for living in a high pressure, stressed out, society by looking good to others and feeling good about ourselves. ‘As the survey shows a windfall of this amount is seen as a passport
to pampering. The means of making our dreams come true by paying for
expensive toys or luxurious services. ‘Half a million is a manageable amount that people know they could
easily cope with, while millions can produce severe financial shell shock.
‘People know that such a vast fortune will utterly transform their lives. Not only will they almost certainly be forced to move away from a house or area they love, they’ll also have to engage a small army of financial advisors, cope with family feuds as well as floods of heart breaking begging letters.” Membership is free** so new players wishing to try their luck to have the best Christmas EVER – with the chance to win up to £1/2 million on 23rd December - can log on to www.nationalbingo.co.uk or visit their nearest bingo club to register. - Ends -
